Tuesday, January 29th

at 2PM to 4PM

Jackson-Vinton Community Action

118 South New York Avenue

Wellston, Ohio 45692

Spencer Wells, Tenant Outreach Director, Coalition on Homelessness & Housing in Ohio (COHHIO)

Topics to be covered

  • how do rental rights strengthen our community?

  • what are the rights and duties of landlords and tenants?

  • what are the protected classes under the fair housing acts?

  • what about reasonable accommodations and modifications for persons with disabilities?

  • what are the protections for households headed by women, or who have children under 18.

  What happened?
10 participants met with Emily and Spencer from the COHHIO staff.  Jackson County Fair Housing staff, Jennifer Jacobs and Sam Brady from JCEDB, gave an overview of their work.

What did participants learn?
Five participants took the Pretest/Post test.  Results showed an improvement of almost 1 point (.83).  Most disappointing was the fact that no one got the landlord entry question right on either pre or post tests.  Some misconceptions have "staying power".

Questions and Discussion

Lots of discussion of the relative merits of tenant paid utilities.  Owners are fearful of tenants leaving utilities unpaid in the wintertime when pipes could freeze.  Discussed prohibitions on turning off utilities to force a tenant to move.
Discussion of reasonable accommodations-what is reasonable?  what documentation is required?

Presented by the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio and the Jackson County Fair Housing Office

Funding for this workshop is provided under a grant with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
